Gastrectomy

Gastrectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of all or part of the stomach. It is commonly performed to treat stomach cancer, severe peptic ulcers, or non-cancerous tumors. Depending on the extent of the disease, a partial gastrectomy (removal of a portion of the stomach) or a total gastrectomy (removal of the entire stomach) may be performed. After surgery, the digestive tract is reconstructed by connecting the remaining stomach or esophagus directly to the small intestine to allow food passage. Patients may need dietary modifications and nutritional supplements post-surgery to adapt to changes in digestion.

Whipple's Procedure

Whipple’s procedure, also known as pancreaticoduodenectomy, is a complex surgery performed to treat pancreatic cancer, bile duct cancer, or tumors in the head of the pancreas. This procedure involves the removal of the head of the pancreas, the duodenum (first part of the small intestine), the gallbladder, and a portion of the bile duct. The remaining parts of the pancreas, bile duct, and intestines are then reconnected to ensure proper digestion. The Whipple procedure is a major operation with a lengthy recovery period, but it can be life-saving for patients with early-stage pancreatic or bile duct cancers.

Colectomy

Colectomy is a surgical procedure to remove all or part of the colon (large intestine). It is performed to treat conditions such as colorectal cancer, diverticulitis, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis), or severe bowel obstruction. There are different types of colectomy, including partial colectomy (removal of a section of the colon) and total colectomy (removal of the entire colon). Depending on the condition, the remaining parts of the intestine may be reconnected, or a colostomy/ileostomy may be created to allow waste to exit the body through an opening in the abdomen.

APR / LAR (Abdominoperineal Resection / Low Anterior Resection)

Abdominoperineal resection (APR) and low anterior resection (LAR) are surgical procedures used to treat rectal cancer. APR involves the removal of the rectum, anus, and part of the sigmoid colon, requiring a permanent colostomy for waste elimination. It is typically performed when the tumor is located very close to the anus. In contrast, LAR is performed to remove tumors in the upper or middle part of the rectum while preserving the anal sphincter, allowing for normal bowel function. Both procedures aim to eliminate cancer while maintaining the best possible quality of life for the patient

Esophageal Surgery

Esophageal surgery is performed to treat esophageal cancer, severe gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), achalasia, or strictures caused by injury or disease. The most common procedure, esophagectomy, involves the removal of a portion or the entire esophagus, followed by reconstruction using part of the stomach or intestine. In cases of GERD, fundoplication surgery may be performed to strengthen the lower esophageal sphincter. Esophageal surgery is complex and requires careful post-operative care, as patients may experience difficulties with swallowing, reflux, or weight loss during recovery.
